StowAway Retractable Doors are known in the industry as the leader when it comes to slow close retractable screens. StowAway is the second retractable screen company to bring the slow close feature to the industry. Slow close means no more slamming retractable screens. It’s kid safe and lawyer safe from slamming screens.
If you are familiar with Retractable Screen Doors, then you have most likely come across the Retracting Screen that Slams Back when you release them from their latch. In fact most Screen Doors on the market do Slam when they are opened. The slamming is caused by the tension of the Spring that is inside the Roller Tube. The spring is a vital part to the Retractable Screen since it is the part that makes the mesh roll up. What the Speed Reducer does is help slow the Retraction of the Screen by adding Resistance while the Spring is rolling up the mesh. Slow close features can be Geared or Hydraulic. Geared Speed Reducers will allow the Mesh to Roll up at just about the same rate as a Hydraulic Speed Reducer, but since it is a Mechanical Part you will tend to hear the Geared Speed Reducer while it is adding the Resistance to the Spring. Hydraulic Speed Reducers on the other hand will offer a Smooth Glide while it works silently. You can not here a Hydraulic Speed Reducer while it is in action because it is a Viscosity based solution.
Speed Reducers will not only stop the annoying Slam that we have all grown to be annoyed by, but will also ensure that you will not have to apply ice to the small fingers of children after they have pinched their fingers between the Housing and the Pull Bar. I have seen this first hand with my own child. who is used to our Screen with a Hydraulic Speed Reducer. She was operating a competitor Screen at a local Hardware Store and when she released the Screen it came Slamming Back while catching her finger in the housing. She was luckily more scared than injured, but the experience did show me just how much the Speed Reducer does when you are using your Retractable Screen Doors.
Speed Reducers or Slow Close features do often take the brunt of many rumors by the Dealers and Distributors of our Competitor Screens. The reason for these Rumors are simple, Competitor Screens cost less than those with the Slow Close feature. This allows the sellers of these Invisible Screens to sell their products at the same price as a Higher Quality Screen, and gives the Dealers a higher profit margin. While the Dealer is making extra money selling you a Screen with no real upgraded features at the same cost as a more Superior Screen, you are paying the same for much less!
Speed Reducers will not tear up your Screen Mesh, or cause your door to break down. In all actuality the Speed Reducer never comes in contact with the mesh, and is installed inside the Roller Tube opposite of the Spring. Mesh is usually damaged by result of a person or animal walking through it. Speed Reducers do not cause your Retractable Screen to Break Down, Retractable Screen Doors do require a little bit of maintenance on the Home Owners part. The top and bottom tracks do need to be kept clean and clear of any debris, and the tracks should be lubricated with a light layer of Dry Silicon Spray every so often. Failing to keep the tracks clean and lubricated is the number 1 reason that Retractable Screens break down and need service.
Not sure if you want a Hydraulic or Geared Speed Reducer? Do not worry, I can tell you by numbers that the majority of our Customer’s choose a Hydraulic Speed Reducer. When we come out to measure for our Custom Built Retractable Screen Door we will show a demo that will allow you to see how the Fast Close (No Speed Reducer), Hydraulic Speed Reducer, and the Geared Speed Reducer work.
